Troubleshooting NFC Tile Scanning on Android/Google Phones

Complete guide for Android and Google Phone users to enable and troubleshoot NFC tile scanning, including device settings, app configuration, and scanning techniques.

Why Can't I See the NFC Scan Button?

Some Android/Google phones require additional setup to enable NFC tile scanning in the Orah app. The tap logo that appears on iPhones may not automatically display on all Android devices.

Requirements for Android NFC

  • Android 5.0 or higher

  • Device with NFC hardware (most modern phones)

  • NFC enabled in phone settings

  • Orah app version 3.0 or higher

Enabling NFC on Your Android Phone

  1. Open Settings on your Android device

  2. Search for NFC or go to Connected Devices → Connection Preferences

  3. Toggle NFC to On

  4. Ensure Android Beam is also enabled (if available)

Configuring Orah App for NFC

  1. Open the Orah app

  2. Go to Settings → NFC Scanning

  3. Enable NFC Tile Detection

  4. Grant NFC permissions if prompted

How to Scan NFC Tiles on Android

Unlike iPhones, Android devices may not show a visible tap button. Instead:

  1. Open the Orah app

  2. Navigate to the Passes or Attendance screen

  3. Hold the back of your phone against the NFC tile

  4. Keep the phone steady for 2-3 seconds

  5. You'll feel a vibration and see a confirmation when successful

Troubleshooting

Still Can't Scan?

  • Check NFC antenna location: On most phones, it's in the upper back. Try different positions.

  • Remove phone case: Thick cases can block NFC signals

  • Update the app: Ensure you have the latest Orah version

  • Restart phone: Toggle NFC off and on, then restart device

Google Pixel Specific

Google Pixel users may need to:

  1. Enable Google Wallet

  2. Set Wallet as the default NFC app

  3. This allows background NFC detection
