Finding Dismissals and permissions
I can't find Dismissals. I looked under Locations. Admin Console → Locations is only where you add pickup spot names. The daily board is in the left sidebar under Location (or Attendance) → Dismissals. If it's not there, you probably don't have dismissal permissions. Ask an admin to tick View & Edit any dismissal event on your profile.
I can open Dismissals, but there's no Dismissal Events tab, or today's dismissal isn't listed. You need two things: the View & Edit any dismissal event permission on your profile, and to be included in that schedule's Who can view dismissal events? or Who can start this dismissal event? list.
I can see the dismissal but there's no Activate button. Only people in Who can start this dismissal event? can activate it. You can still move students once someone else has started it.
Where's the scanner in the staff app? Tap the blue + on a dismissal board, or the floating + on the Home tab, then Scan QR code. If there's no + on the Home tab, the staff member needs the View & Edit any dismissal event permission.
The board and students
The board is empty, or a student is missing. Check these in order:
The student is on a schedule (Admin Console → Students → Assign Dismissal Schedule).
Today's weekday is switched on, and the schedule is Active.
You can view this schedule (see the two questions above).
The student isn't in the Not Required group because of an all-day pass.
Try a hard refresh of your browser.
A student is missing from the board, but they're on the schedule. Check the Alternate Dismissal Students tab. Students on an early or late pass or activity are listed there, not under Regular.
We assigned the schedule. Why is every student at the same spot? The schedule doesn't set pickup spots. Go to Dismissal Settings → Default Student Schedule and set each weekday's transport option for each student. To update lots of students at once, use Import.
We built a roll for each pickup spot. Is that the same as Dismissals? No. A roll records attendance. It doesn't know which parent arrived, can't scan QR codes, and doesn't move students through the dismissal board. Use Location → Dismissals → Dismissal Events instead.
A student came to the wrong pickup spot. Can we dismiss them? Yes. As long as you can view or start that dismissal, you can dismiss any student on it. Mark them dismissed at the spot they actually left from.
Our bus driver won't use Orah. They don't need to. Staff use Transport Arrival when the bus arrives, then mark each student Dismissed as they board.
What does the red "Transport conflicts" number mean? Those students are on an early or late pass or activity, but their transport isn't one of the options allowed for it. Click the filter to see them and pick an allowed transport.
A pass covers the afternoon. Will duty staff see that the student is away? Yes, if the pass covers that day and the pass type has Enable Dismissal Override switched on. An all-day pass shows the student as Not Required.
Who changed this student's transport, and why? Open the student's record and look at History. It shows every change, who made it (staff, a parent, or System for automatic changes like passes), and when.
The dismissal is still open tonight. That's fine. It's marked Completed automatically at midnight. Students who weren't marked Dismissed stay that way in the record.
Does anything reset at 8 PM? No. 8:00 PM is just the latest time a dismissal schedule can end (schedules must run between 7:00 AM and 8:00 PM). Nothing moves students at 8 PM. A student's location only changes when staff mark them Dismissed, which checks them into your school's Home location. Separately, at midnight, any dismissal still In Progress is marked Completed. That doesn't check anyone into Home.
Can we delete a dismissal or a student's record? No. Dismissals and records are kept as a history of what happened. The "Delete" permissions on staff profiles don't currently do anything.
Parents and plan changes
Do parents' changes need to be approved by the school? No. If your school allows parent changes, they're saved straight away. If you've turned parent changes off, the parent is told to contact the school, and nothing is sent for approval. If you want the front office to make every change, turn the Parent Dismissal Changes settings off.
A parent changed the plan but the board didn't change. Usually it's one of these:
They changed the weekly plan, but today's dismissal had already been activated. They need to use Today only, or staff can edit today's row.
They tried after the cutoff time, and would have seen "Changes closed…".
Your school has parent changes switched off.
A pass is in place for that day and was saved more recently.
They changed a future day. That's applied on the morning of that day.
A staff member changed the same day afterwards. The most recent change wins.
Parents can't see or choose the bus. The bus is probably set to Staff only, or limited to specific students. Staff can still assign it, and once a child is on it, their parents can choose it again for other days.
"I have arrived" is missing. Either Allow authorised contacts to self announce is off (parents get Show QR code to staff instead), the dismissal hasn't been started yet, no student is selected, or another adult has already announced.
The button says "You can announce arrival from 3:15", it's now 3:20, and it's still greyed out. The button turns on when staff activate the dismissal, not at the scheduled time. Staff just need to tap Activate.
A parent says their app shows "On the way", but staff say the student is "Ready for Release". They're the same thing. Parents see friendlier names: Waiting for pick up, On the way, Ready for pickup and Picked up.
Should parents use the app while driving? No. Ask them to tap I have arrived or open their QR code while parked, before joining the moving line.
Can parents see the dismissal note? No. Dismissal notes are only shown to staff.
Where do I add a note like "Dad isn't allowed to collect"? In Dismissal Settings → Default Student Schedule, open the student and click Add Dismissal Note. Duty staff will see it on the board, on the student's record, and every time they scan or dismiss that student.
QR codes and pickup contacts
We scanned the parent's QR code, but the student isn't signed out. That's expected. Scanning records that the adult has arrived. A staff member still needs to mark the student Dismissed.
The scanner says the code has expired, been revoked, or wasn't found. See the table of scanning messages in Scanning pickup QR codes and confirming pickups. A one-time code only works on the day it was made for, and stops working if the parent removes that person.
I sent a one-time pickup code but the person didn't get it. Check that an email address was entered. If only a mobile number was given, nothing is sent automatically, so use Share QR Code to send it yourself.
A parent can't see "Designate to another contact". It only appears for today, when the child is being Picked up, and before the dismissal has started or the cutoff has passed. Your school may also have switched it off. In any of these cases, the office can add the person for them with Add Designated Pickup Contact on the student's record (staff website or staff app).
Dismissal notifications
Dismissal notifications are push notifications on phones only. They need the Orah app installed, notifications allowed, and the person to be logged in. There's no email or text copy of them. (The only dismissal emails are the pickup QR code emails.)
Notifications that are sent
Staff: a dismissal has started. Sent when someone taps Activate Dismissal, to staff included in that schedule's Who can view or Who can start lists. The title is the schedule name, and it says "[Schedule name] has started." Tapping it in the staff app opens that dismissal.
Parents: another parent changed the weekly plan. Sent when a parent saves a Recurring Schedule change, to the student's other parents (not the person who made the change). For example: "Sam Jones updated Ava's Monday, Wednesday and Friday dismissal plan."
Notifications that are not sent
When a dismissal ends or is completed. There's no "dismissal has ended" notification.
One-day changes, by parents or staff.
A parent tapping I have arrived. Staff see it on the live board, but it doesn't buzz their phone.
QR scans, Transport Arrival, or marking students as dismissed.
A pass or absence changing a student's day. (Pass types have a setting called "Who can receive notifications for this dismissal session?", but it doesn't send anything yet.)
Reminders about where to pick up today. The pickup spot is shown in the Family App, but there's no reminder notification.
Why didn't I get a notification? Most dismissal actions don't send notifications (see above). Also check the person is logged in to the app with notifications allowed.
Current limitations
There's no approval workflow for parent changes. Changes are either allowed or blocked.
There's no "end dismissal" button and no "dismissal ended" notification. Dismissals close automatically at midnight.
There are no notifications for one-day changes, arrivals, scans, or passes. Staff rely on the live board.
There are no pickup-location reminder notifications for parents.
Dismissal schedules must run between 7:00 AM and 8:00 PM, school time.
Each student can be on one dismissal schedule.
After a dismissal is activated, weekly plan changes don't affect today. Edit today's students directly.
Picked up students can't be dismissed by dragging alone. Their pickup person has to be recorded.
Parents' own QR codes aren't emailed. They're in the Family App.
One-time pickup codes can only be sent by email. There's no text message option.
Parents can only designate a one-time pickup person for today, before the dismissal starts.
Dismissal notes can only be added or changed from Default Student Schedule, not from the live board.
The parent web link only supports today's changes and designating a contact. There's no arrival button or QR code there.
Dismissal events and records can't be deleted.
The pass type setting "Who can receive notifications for this dismissal session?" doesn't send notifications yet.
Students are assigned to schedules from Admin Console → Students, not from within Dismissals.
Transport Rolls and regular attendance rolls are not the dismissal board.
