Video walkthrough
This video walks through how to set up a class attendance roll template in Orah, including configuring roll codes, rules, automation settings, and alerts:
What is Class Attendance Roll Type Setting ?
Class Attendance Roll Type Settings allow administrators to configure automated attendance tracking for scheduled classes, lessons, and group meetings. These settings enable automatic roll creation, student marking, and attendance record generation based on class schedules and student check-ins.
❓ How do I turn off the "you haven't taken attendance yet" reminder / attendance reminders that teachers receive?
This is one of our most common questions. These are called Attendance Reminders, and they live in their own Reminders section — not under Automation, and not under the general Alerts Settings page. Go to Admin Console → Rolls → Class Attendance, open the roll type, and scroll to the bottom of the page to find Reminders. See Section 4a: Reminders (Attendance Reminders) below.

🛂 Get Access to Class Attendance Roll Type Settings
You will be able to see this settings page if you have Roll Settings permission
Ask your admin to assign Roll Settings access under additional permissions to individual staff (or in bulk using Roles)
Requires `scheduled_rolls` feature flag to be enabled
Settings Under Class Attendance Roll Type
The Class Attendance Roll Type configuration is organized into 7 main sections:
Automation [BETA - QR scan via Checkpoint App]
Reminders (Attendance Reminders) ⭐ turn off "haven't taken attendance yet" notifications here
☝🏽 Note - A default roll type will be created for the school to get started.
Section 1: Roll Code
Configure the attendance codes/states available when taking class attendance roll call.
Default Roll Codes: Unmarked, Present, Tardy Excused (TE), Tardy Unexcused (TU), Absent Excused (AE), Absent Unexcused (AU), On Absence (Excused).
Section 2: Rules
Configure rules for how passes interact with class attendance rolls — whether staff can end or disconnect passes during the roll.
Section 3: Default Options
Configure default behaviors including automatically checking students into locations when marked present or late.
Section 4: Automation
Configure automated attendance marking, including auto-start and auto-end of rolls, automatic roll codes based on check-in timing, and automated attendance via Kiosk or NFC checkpoints.
Note: This section is NOT where you turn off the "haven't taken attendance yet" staff notification — that setting lives in the separate Reminders section below.
Section 4a: Reminders (Attendance Reminders)
This is the setting for one of our most frequently asked questions: "How do I stop teachers getting a notification that they haven't taken attendance yet?"
Attendance Reminders notify staff if they haven't submitted their class roll within a set timeframe (e.g., the first 10 minutes of class). To turn these off or adjust the timing:
Go to Admin Console → Rolls → Class Attendance
Open the relevant roll type
Scroll to the bottom of the page to the Reminders section
Disable or edit the reminder there
Do not confuse this with the Automation section (auto-marking/Kiosk/NFC) above, or with the school-wide Alert Settings page (which covers student absence/tardiness alerts to students, parents, and staff) — Attendance Reminders is its own dedicated section on this page.
Section 5: Alerts
Configure student roll state alerts (notify students when marked absent, late, etc.) and general attendance concern alerts to students, parents, and staff.
Section 6: Attendance Policy
The Attendance Policy tab lets you set late and absent thresholds by year level. When a student reaches a threshold, Orah can trigger alerts or automated actions based on your configuration.
To configure attendance policies:
Go to Location → Attendance → Class Attendance and select a roll type.
Click the Attendance Policy tab.
Set Late and Absent thresholds for each year level.
Use the interactive preview to verify how the policy applies.
Click Save.
Class Attendance Roll Type Settings provide powerful automation for tracking student attendance in scheduled classes, reducing manual work while ensuring accurate attendance records.
