Dose Restrictions

This article explains how to configure dose restrictions for medications to help prevent unsafe medication administration.

Updated today

🧩 Overview

Dose Restrictions allow schools to define safe limits for how much medication can be administered to a student.

These limits help staff identify situations where medication may exceed recommended dosage levels.

When restrictions are configured, Orah checks them when medication administration is recorded.

If a limit is exceeded, the system displays a warning message.

Types of dose restrictions

Two types of restrictions can be configured.

Maximum units per administration

This sets the maximum amount of medication allowed in a single dose.

Example:

Maximum 2 tablets per administration

Maximum units within a time period

This sets the maximum amount of medication allowed within a time window.

Example:

Maximum 6 tablets within 24 hours

🧭 How to configure dose restrictions

  1. Go to Student Care → Medication

  2. Open Medication Catalog from Medication Settings

  3. Click Add Medication or Edit Medication

  4. Enable Dose Restrictions

  5. Configure the following fields:

    1. Maximum units

    2. Time window (hours, days, or weeks)

  6. Click Save

How restriction warnings work

When staff attempt to administer medication, the system checks the configured restrictions.

Two types of warnings may appear.

Dose exceeds single administration limit

Example warning:

“The dose exceeds the maximum allowed of 2 units per administration.”

Dose exceeds limit within time window

Example warning:

“This student has already received this medication within the previous time period. Administering again may exceed the safe dosage limit.”

Important behavior

Dose restriction warnings:

  • do not block administration

  • are informational alerts

Staff can review the warning and still proceed with the administration if necessary.

When restrictions apply

Dose restrictions apply only to new medication administrations.

If restrictions are updated later:

  • previous administration records are not changed

Best practices

Schools should:

  • configure dose restrictions for common OTC medications

  • review dosage limits with health staff

  • ensure staff understand restriction warnings
