Medication Warnings

This article explains how Orah warns staff when a medication administration may exceed configured dose limits.

Dose restriction warnings help prevent unsafe medication administration.

When staff attempt to record a dose that exceeds configured limits, the system displays a warning message.

These limits are configured in the Medication Catalog.


Types of dose restrictions

Two types of limits can be configured.


Per-administration limit

Restricts the maximum number of units that can be given in a single administration.

Example:

Maximum 2 tablets per administration


Rolling time window limit

Restricts how much medication can be administered within a time period.

Example:

Maximum 6 tablets within 24 hours


When warnings appear

Warnings appear during administration when the entered dose exceeds configured limits.

Two conditions trigger warnings:

Condition

Description

Per-administration limit exceeded

Dose exceeds the maximum allowed per administration

Time window limit exceeded

Total doses exceed the allowed amount within the configured time period


Warning messages

Example warning:

The dose exceeds the maximum allowed of [n] units per administration.

If previous administrations exist, the message may include additional context.


Confirmation step

When a warning appears, staff must confirm before continuing.

Important behaviour

  • Dose restriction warnings are informational.

  • They alert staff but do not block administration.
